Our Technology

Modern dentistry

When you seek care at our office, you are assured that Dr. Pica and staff utilize modern technology to enhance the quality and fit for your dental care.

Digital Imaging:

There are many guidelines that we follow when x-rays are taken. X-rays allow us to see everything we cannot see with our own eyes. X-rays enable us to detect cavities in between your teeth, determine bone level, and analyze the health of your bone. We can also examine the roots and nerves of teeth, diagnose lesions such as cysts or tumors, as well as assess damage when trauma occurs.

Dental x-rays are invaluable aids in diagnosing, treating, and maintaining dental health. Exposure time for dental x-rays is extremely minimal.  We utilize Digital Imaging Technologies within the office.  With digital imaging, exposure is up to 95 percent less when compared to traditional x-rays.  Digital imaging can also help us retrieve valuable diagnostic information.

Digital imaging allows us to store patient images, and enables us to quickly and easily transfer them to specialists or insurance companies.

Digital X-Rays:

Digital x-rays don’t require film. Instead, we capture the images via a small sensor placed directly in your mouth. This technique is more comfortable, even when we must take the images at difficult angles. Digital X-rays takes seconds not minutes, and offer more precision since we view the image on a computer monitor, instead of holding a 35mm film up to the light. The x-ray is displayed almost immediately on a flat panel LCD screen giving an image more than 10x larger than a traditional x-rays which can take 5 minutes or more to get to a viewable transparency.  The software we use also has built in tools to allow for better diagnosis. Digital x-rays have many benefits over traditional x-rays, one of which is a reduction in the amount of radiation patients are exposed to. Digital X-rays results in up to 90% less radiation exposure to you.  Not only is this system beneficial to your health, but it is also environmentally friendly. Along with this reduction in radiation comes a complete elimination of all hazardous developing solutions or lead covered films, which end up polluting the environment. Also, the patient can see what we see and so better understand the dental situation and our recommendations for care. If a referral to a specialist is needed, it is also easier and faster to send these images via e-mail.

Intraoral Camera:

Many patients, are already very familiar and comfortable with the technology used in a dental practice. Computers and TV screens are their primary method of information processing.

Our office utilizes intraoral camera technology that helps enhance your understanding of your diagnosis. An intraoral camera is a very small camera that allows our doctors to view clear, precise images of your mouth, teeth and gums, in order to accurately make a diagnosis. With clear, defined, enlarged images, you see details that may be missed by standard mirror examinations.  This can mean faster diagnosis in less time.

Intra oral cameras also enable our practice to save your images in our office computer to provide a permanent record of treatments. These images can be printed for you, other specialists, and your lab or insurance companies.

Odyssey Laser Therapy:

The Odyssey Diode Laser is dentistry's most patient-friendly soft-tissue laser to date and it provides you with comfortable, preventive, minimally invasive treatment options.
The light from the Odyssey laser's wavelength has been precisely made for soft tissue applications and can be focused into a tiny point to do very fine, exact work. Its precision in dental surgery reduces tissue swelling and there’s less need for sutures. Thanks to its ability to cauterize small blood vessels, the post-operative response of the laser care will usually produce a cleaner and healthier surgical site with less discomfort when compared to alternative methods of surgery.  The laser also promotes healing for infected and irritated tissues. Since there is a favourable response to laser treatment, the resultant healing is less complicated and often shorter when compared to traditional techniques.
Soft tissue lasers enable minor surgical procedures, decontaminate the area at the same time and have the added effect of natural sterilization as it evaporates bacteria, viruses and fungi, leading to a large decrease in local infections after surgery. Some soft tissue procedures around the gingiva can be completed without anaesthesia.
In many cases, the laser can also be used to treat deep gingival pockets that harbour bacteria and cause gum disease.
An additional benefit of dental diode laser technology is its ability to reduce the pain and longevity of cold sores and fever blisters.

DIAGNOdent

The DIAGNOdent is a revolutionary dental laser tool we utilize in the office It safely and effectively detects changes that may not yet be visible on a cavity detecting x-ray, or even below the tooth surface. A small, painless laser light source is placed on the affected tooth surface. A signal is sent back to a control unit which allows us to help detect if there is any decay present. The DIAGNOdent allows us to quickly catch what could later become a much bigger problem.

Ultrasonic Scalers:

The Cavitron Plus scaler and the Cavitron Jet Plus combination scaler/air polisher are the most recent additions to a complete portfolio of products designed to deliver superior dental hygiene care. These modern devices allow the hygienist to thoroughly and quickly do periodontal care over traditional methods.

Sterilization:

We use up-to-date sterilization procedures to ensure your safety and health. For more information please read about our Infection Control.
